The first signs can appear 15 to 20 years before it manifests as the typical involuntary shaking of limbs and muscle stiffness. Mother began to hit and kick dad in her sleep many years ago. He was startled, she was startled. She would yell, scream and use a dirty language in her sleep sometimes sitting up with open eyes as if she was awake. I guess dad was really worried but he never expressed it directly. She has always been a gentle and kind person. What showed up at night could seem like a darker trait of personality but turned out to be Parkinson's disease.

Now the shaking have been subdued with medication but she still has agitated nights. Dad is used to it. When I sleep over I hear his snoring and sometimes a strange yell that doesn't fit in with my sense of my mother; my mind automatically tries to identify the source of the yell with something it knows but gives up.
